Is Improvisation Exchange different from Contact Improviation?
Yes -in some ways it is. The main focus is on individual movement exploration and most of the workshops take their starting point in practices that allow each improviser to explore their own movement potential and interest. The artists and practitioners leading the workshops have a specific interest in movement improvisation often focusing on different movement qualities, relationship with the surroundings or other participants. They may come from backgrounds of somatic practices (such as Feldenkrais, Body-Mind-Centring and Skinner Releasing Technique), theatre, music and voice or other dance practices (Tango, contemporary dance, Butoh) but all sessions are based on improvisation.
Jam session that follow the workshops are open to making contact with other participants. The teacher will lead the group into the jam with prompts or tasks that follow their workshop.

What should I wear and bring?
Wear comfortable clothes that doesn't restrict movement and bare feet or socks. Bring some water and a snack or lunch if you are staying for jam as the cafe at NSCD is usually closed on Sundays.

Do I need to book in advance? What are the prices for workshops?
No need to book in advance. But come 15 min early to sign in. The workshops are priced at £6.50 (or £5 if you are a student, unemployed or over 60), this includes the jam. If you come for jam session (1.30-3 pm) only it's £3.

Can I bring my child?
We welcome children of all ages to the jam sessions. Should you wish to bring a child to the workshop please get in touch before the workshop on [email protected] so we can ask the teacher if bringing a child is appropriate for the session.
