rachel dean - the underscore
We're starting the year with a workshop based on The Underscore, a wonderful way to come together and dance. Rachel Dean will facilitate and lead the session to make it accessible to less experienced dancers, perhaps leading to a full Underscore in a future session.
"The Underscore is a long-form dance improvisation structure developed by Nancy Stark Smith. It is a vehicle for incorporating Contact Improvisation into a broader arena of improvisational dance practice; for developing greater ease dancing in spherical space—alone and with others; and for integrating kinesthetic and compositional concerns while improvising. It allows for a full spectrum of energetic and physical expressions, embodying a range of forms and changing states. Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable. Within the frame, dancers are free to create their own movements, dynamics, and relationships—with themselves, each other, the group, the music, and the environment. Each Underscore is unique, providing rich and often inspiring experiences of the human and artistic phenomena of dance improvisation." https://nancystarksmith.com/underscore/
Rachel Dean is a contemporary dance artist based in Leeds who performs, teaches and choreographs. She has a particular interest in Contact Improvisation and collaboration with other artists and art forms and is part of improvisation collective Mathilde. Her choreography has included Wolf, a solo Little Red Riding Hood, Love in Idleness, a Midsummer dance theatre performance which toured gardens and parks in Summer 2012, Nativity, a Christmas solo exploring the enduring power of the myth and magic of the Virgin Mary, The Train Pulled Out, The Light Pulled In, a site-specific work created in the National Railway Museum with undergraduates from York St John University and Entwined, a dance theatre piece performed by a dressmaker and a dancer. She is passionate about sharing her love of dance and teaches Contact Improvisation and creative dance to various groups including dance undergraduates, open adult groups, adults with learning disabilities and professional dancers. Rachel has an MA Creative Practice (Dance Professional Pathway) from Laban and Independent Dance and a BPA (Hons) from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. She is currently an Associate Lecturer at University of Lincoln.
Note: This session will run continuously from 11.30 - 14.45.
